Our Methodology

The Digital Wellness Institute's Flourishing Model® is a framework for understanding and improving our digital well-being, measured through a rigorous data assessment for certification as a digitally-well workplace. We offer a variety of resources to help people improve their digital well-being, including the Flourishing Insights Assessment, courses, coaching, and a micro-habits platform. We also have a free online assessment tool that can help you identify your strengths and weaknesses in each of the eight dimensions of the Flourishing Model.

The Flourishing Model

Our proprietary model for human flourishing in the digital era consists of eight wellness dimensions:

  • Mindfulness: Awareness of our digital habits and how they impact our lives.
  • Balance: Finding a healthy balance between our digital and non-digital lives.
  • Purpose: Using technology to connect with our values and goals.
  • Connection: Building meaningful relationships with others online and offline.
  • Creativity: Using technology to express ourselves and explore our creativity.
  • Learning: Using technology to learn and grow.
  • Protection: Taking steps to protect our privacy and security online.
  • Well-being: Feeling good physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Certification as a digitally well workplace occurs when an organization meets a minimum bar for participation and Flourishing Insights Survey score. List rankings for national publication are based on this survey data, which we analyze to determine the extent to which this experience is shared by the full workforce.

Assessment

The Digital Wellness Institute has been surveying employees and students around the world about their digital wellness experiences for years. We have developed a set of proprietary survey questions and metrics that not only predict whether employees feel their workplace is digitally well, but predict productivity, engagement, and other drivers of business success.

Using our Flourishing Insights Assessment survey, we measure the core of what creates digitally well workplaces—based on the eight dimensions of the model. The survey allows employees to share confidential qualitative and quantitative feedback about their organization's workplace expectations and culture by responding to 20 statements on a five-point Likert scale and open-ended questions.

Certification

Certification as a digitally well workplace occurs when an organization meets a minimum bar for participation and Flourishing Insights Survey score. List rankings for national publication are based on this survey data, which we analyze to determine the extent to which this experience is shared by the full workforce. To assess the extent to which an organization is digitally flourishing, we look at the following factors:
  • Quality of the employee experience: This includes factors such as how employees feel about their work-life balance, their ability to use technology to be productive, and their sense of belonging in the organization.
  • Consistency of the employee experience: This means that the positive digital experiences of some employees should not be at the expense of the negative experiences of others.
  • Generosity, caring, and innovation of the organization's digital programs: This includes factors such as the organization's commitment to providing employees with the resources they need to use technology in a healthy way, and its willingness to experiment with new digital initiatives.
We collect data on these factors through surveys and essay responses from employees. We also review the organization's digital policies and practices. To be eligible for the Digital Wellness Flourishing ranked list, organizations must meet the following criteria: They must have at least 1,000 employees in the United States. They must not be a government agency. They must have a positive digital culture that is equitable and inclusive.

Get Inspired

We believe that the Digital Wellness Flourishing Model is a valuable tool for organizations that want to create a healthy and productive digital workplace for all employees. Here are some specific examples of how organizations can use the Digital Wellness Flourishing Model to improve their digital culture:
  • Establish clear digital boundaries: Employees should be able to set boundaries around their work-life balance, such as limiting the number of work-related notifications they receive outside of work hours.
  • Provide employees with the resources they need to use technology in a healthy way: This could include providing employees with access to training on digital mindfulness, or offering resources on how to protect their privacy online.
  • Experiment with new digital initiatives: Organizations should be willing to experiment with new ways of using technology to improve the employee experience. For example, they could create a digital wellness program that helps employees manage their screen time or learn how to use technology to reduce stress.
